Anthem-Cave Buttes Loop


Distance: 43 miles
Elevation Gain/Loss: 901 ft

This 43 mile loop extends north to Anthem and encircles the Cave Buttes Recreation Area.

Loads of nice bike lanes and mostly gentle grades on this loop. A short walk of about 100 yards through the desert makes this loop possible.

You start out the loop with its most demanding climb: from Tramonto up the access road to Pioneer Road. Then heading into Anthem, you do about three-quarters of a lap around Anthem, and sneak out the back, Jack! A dismount is recommended to make the short hop into Desert Foothills. Skirt the edge of paved territory and pop back out onto Carefree Highway. Heading east, you can cut off the busy corner at Cave Creek Road by taking Black Mountain Parkway and Rancho Paloma. Then, haul down Cave Creek Road on a segment of the Phoenix Sonoran Bikeway. Head back east on Deer Valley Rd, past the airport to 19th Ave. It is a gentle climb from here back north along Norterra and North Valley Parkways.
